It's a fun read. I think the quote in the book from Josef von Sternberg on Shanghai is a perfect summation: "There always has to be some place where the world sweeps its dirt and refuse." The story of Shanghai during the years leading up to World War II is well written and fast moving.
The Lady from Shanghai is a 1947 film noir directed by Orson Welles and starring Welles, his estranged wife Rita Hayworth and Everett Sloane. It is based on the novel If I Die Before I Wake by Sherwood King.. Although The Lady from Shanghai initially received mixed reviews, it has grown in stature over the years, and many critics have praised its set designs and camerawork.

The tune is pleasing, it may do very well on the Hit Parade--but Lady from Shanghai is not a musical comedy...Mr. Roemheld is an ardent devotee of an old-fashioned type of scoring now referred to in our business as "Disney". In other words, if somebody falls down, he makes a "falling down" sound in the orchestra, etc., etc...
During a whale watching expedition, I hear about plastic bottles lodged in the throats of sperm whales, causing them to starve to death. At the Arthur’s Pass National Park, signs remind hikers to pack out their trash.
We begin in the Northland, the northernmost tip of the North Island.It’s bordered on the west by the Tasman Sea and on the east by the Pacific Ocean. The land was once densely forested. It remains a fecund subtropical haven for giant ferns, thick vines, and the enormous kauri trees that can live for 3,000 years.
This entertaining book is obviously the result of a tremendous amount of research, and offers a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ ambiance describing both protagonists & the era. Several reviewers have noted that the ‘noir’ becomes progressively darker as the book proceeds….. just as conditions in Shanghai did during those years.
